Gut feeling is valuable for a business owner. It helps you spot opportunities that the numbers do not show yet. The problem starts when gut feeling is the only<\/strong> tool and the numbers are looked at only after something has already gone wrong.<\/p>

In October 2026 we asked business owners how they make decisions. 75% of respondents had made an important decision in the past year at least partly on gut feeling<\/strong> and 57% said they have no regular financial review meetings (read the survey summary<\/a>). That is natural: in a small company the owner keeps everything in their head. As the company grows, it no longer fits in one person\u2019s head, and gut feeling starts to go wrong in the most expensive places.<\/p>

The following seven signs will help you judge whether your company is managed with the support of numbers.<\/p>

1. You don\u2019t know how much money will be in the account at the end of the month without asking your accountant<\/h2>

Today\u2019s bank balance does not tell the whole story. What matters is what will be there in one or three months, once salaries, taxes and supplier invoices have been paid. If you cannot even roughly say that, you are running the company in hindsight.<\/p>

2. Prices are set by looking at competitors or by feel<\/h2>

\u201cThe competitor charges the same\u201d is not a pricing method. If you don\u2019t know the full cost of your product or service, growing sales can actually mean growing losses.<\/p>

3. You don\u2019t know which product, service or client brings in the most profit<\/h2>

Your biggest client is not necessarily your most profitable one. Once discounts, extra work and long payment terms are taken into account, some clients may actually cost the company money.<\/p>

4. Reports reach you late or not at all<\/h2>

If the monthly result is known only six weeks later, it is history, not management information. The same applies when reports exist but nobody looks at them because they don\u2019t answer the questions the owner actually has.<\/p>

5. Big decisions are made on the basis of \u201cit feels like the right time\u201d<\/h2>

A new employee, bigger premises, an investment or a loan affect the company for years. Without a calculation of how the decision affects cash flow and profit, it is a bet, not a plan.<\/p>

6. Cash shortages come as a surprise<\/h2>

Revenue is growing and there are plenty of orders, yet there is less money in the account than ever. The reason is usually prepayments, inventory and long customer payment terms. A cash flow forecast would show this in advance; gut feeling does not.<\/p>

7. The goals are in your head, but there is no budget<\/h2>

\u201cWe want to grow this year\u201d is a wish. A budget turns it into a plan: how much in sales, at what costs and with what profit. Without a budget there is nothing to compare actual results against.<\/p>
